Security Officer

Aircraft Research Association (ARA) is a unique SME and the UK’s leading independent transonic wind tunnel with a passionate workforce of engineering and aerodynamic professionals. We are a leading specialist in aerodynamic research providing complementary services and solutions to international aerospace and defence clients. Our clients include Saab, Bombardier, Boeing, Turkish Aerospace, Lockheed Martin, Airbus, Comac and BAE Systems.

Typical projects include producing scaled-down military and civilian aircraft models, comprising multiple parts, which are assembled together and used as highly accurate forces/pressures measuring devices within the on-site high-speed (transonic) wind tunnel.


We are looking to recruit a permanent Security Officer to work as part of our friendly and professional team where you will be expected to maintain total physical security of the ARA premised. Reporting to the Senior Security Officer, this role will be on a shift-rota of either 36 or 48 hours per week with possible overtime as and when required.

We are looking for individuals with excellent communication skills and with the drive to ensure the job is completed to the highest standards. Successful individuals will be confident team players with an eye for detail.

Working patterns

12 hours Shift Patterns (day or night): 

1st week = 36 hours Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday

                         2nd week = 48 hours Monday, Friday to Sunday

Overtime:        Will be required as part of this role to cover annual leave and other staff absences. 

                 Working weekends and Bank Holidays will be required as part of your normal working responsibilities

  Uniform:       Will be provided              

    Main Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Be proficient in monitoring cameras, intruder alarm systems and access control systems
  • Provide ingress/egress control to the site
  • Maintain records of all visitors/contractors to site and provide escorts to host as necessary
  • Act as a focal point for mail deliveries
  • Operate the switchboard during normal office hours and out of normal business hours
  • Provide support to the Health and Safety function regarding lone working arrangements
  • Carry out regular security patrols around the site checking out perimeter fences for signs of unauthorised entry and respond to alarm activation as required
  • Respond to all alarms
  • Act as focal point for Emergency Services as required
  • Ensure Fire Muster sheets are updated regularly
  • Carry out other ad-hoc security responsibilities as requested by the Senior Security Officer
  • Adhere to the Health and Safety procedures as well as Quality Standards
  • Carry out any other duties which may be required in order to facilitate the efficient and effective running of the department as requested by the relevant Department Manager.

Key skills / experience:

  • Previous experience working as a Security Officer would be preferable but not essential.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Willing to work effectively as part of a team
  • Dependability, punctuality and positive attitude
  • Professional appearance, excellent public relations skills
  • Ability to develop effective working relationships at all levels
  • Basic Computer Literacy and experience of working with Microsoft office platform
  • Hold and maintain a current First Aid Certificate and carry out First-Aid Duties as and when required
  • Obtain and maintain UK Government Security Clearance


The successful candidate must satisfy security clearance requirements – including the last 5 years continual UK residency.
