Mechanical Engineer (Early Careers Opportunity)

Aircraft Research Association (ARA), the UK’s leading independent transonic wind tunnel and we are looking to recruit an early career Mechanical Engineer to join our multi-disciplined Systems Engineering Team.  The Systems Engineering Team has a wide range of disciplines including: electrical, electronic, software, mechanical, and control engineers who deliver and maintain capabilities required to operate wind tunnel models and rigs, and the plant required to operate ARA’s facilities.

Working for ARA, you will play an integral part in the development of world leading capabilities that emerge from the challenges posed by our customers at the cutting edge of aerodynamic research.  ARA boasts a wide international customer base of aircraft manufacturers who require new and novel solutions to achieve highly accurate results from wind tunnel trials conducted at ARA.

We are committed to invest in the development of the candidate and ensure they become a fully rounded Mechanical Engineer during the early years of their career.  The ideal candidate will have a degree in Mechanical Engineering, or a related discipline. In addition, we are looking for someone who has had some industrial experience either as part of or subsequent to their degree.

Do not be put off by the list of requirements, even if you don’t match all of these, each application will be assessed on their own merit. We are eager to find people who have a passion for teamwork, with a positive attitude, integrity and a willingness to learn and share knowledge with colleagues.

In summary if you are passionate about engineering as we are, and you think you meet some of these skills, we would love to hear from you.

The role (Grade 4B):

The role will provide opportunities to gain experience of working alongside other highly skilled engineering teams who design and manufacture wind tunnel models, conduct the wind tunnel tests, and maintain other aspects of the facilities and capabilities. Some of the machinery and equipment you will have a chance to work in are:

  • Rotating plant, including motors, journal bearings, fans, and turbine compressors.
  • Hydraulic systems, including hydraulic power units, circuits, and actuators.
  • Pneumatic system, including air compressors (ranging from 7 bar screw and gear compressors to 250 bar reciprocating compressors), circuits and actuators.
  • Cooling systems, including water pumps, heat exchangers, evaporative cooling towers and chillers.
  • Air drying systems.
  • Lubrication systems.
  • Model movement systems.
  • Water treatment plant.

 What are we looking for?

  • Understand the design intent of existing plant and machinery, and their operation and maintenance requirements.
  • Design and produce new mechanical engineering elements of plant, rigs and equipment.
  • Maintain and upgrade the mechanical and process engineering elements of legacy plant, rigs and equipment.
  • Perform analysis of the mechanical aspects of systems such and stress, structural, fluid flow, and thermodynamics.
  • Be familiar with the operation and maintenance of plant, such as hydraulic power units, various types of air compressors, and other rotating machinery.
  • Produce mechanical documentation, including sketches and drawings, and piping and instrumentation diagrams.

Our Benefits:

This is an exciting permanent opportunity for the right person to be part of a successful and highly skilled engineering company, working 38 hours per week, Monday to Friday.  In return, we offer a range of benefits including: a competitive salary and pension scheme; flexible working options (normal hours are 0800hrs to 1621hrs); free parking; a relocation package where appropriate; employee assistance programme; private health insurance and 26 days’ annual leave plus Bank Holidays (increasing with length of service after 5 years’ service)

The successful candidate must satisfy security clearance requirements – including the last 5 years continual UK residency.
