Aerodynamics Operations Manager

Aircraft Research Association (ARA) is a unique SME and the UK’s leading independent transonic wind tunnel with a passionate workforce of engineering and aerodynamic professionals. We are a leading specialist in aerodynamic research providing complementary services and solutions to international aerospace and defence clients. Our clients include Saab, Bombardier, Boeing, Turkish Aerospace, Lockheed Martin, Airbus, Comac and BAE Systems.

Typical projects include producing scaled-down military and civilian aircraft models, comprising multiple parts, which are assembled together and used as highly accurate forces/pressures measuring devices within the on-site high-speed (transonic) wind tunnel.


We are looking for a skilled and forward-thinker leader to join us as Aerodynamics Operations Manager following a recent re-organisation. Reporting to the Head of Aerodynamics, you will lead our experimental aerodynamics operations team, driving continuous improvement accross efficiency, quality, safety and capability.

To succeed in this role, you will need hands-on experience in wind tunnel operating operations, model preparation and testing, along with a degree (or equivalent) in mechanical or electrical/electronic engineering. Strong practical knowledge of mechanical rigs, wind tunnel models and instrumentation is essential.

Salary:  £60,000 – £65,000 per annum, depending upon experience

Typical Hours: Full-time, 40 hours per week

This is a varied and demanding role where the main responsibilities will include:

  • Identify and assign resource appropriately across the site to meet project plans.
  • Ensure the preparation of model and test cells to meet contractual demands and project plans across the site.
  • Communicate with other teams and departments the operational dependencies to make sure work on future tests can commence on time.
  • Provide input into project planning and bid estimates by communicating the resource and time required by the operational team.
  • Provide people management including conducting PDRS, forming progression plans and signing off timesheets.
  • Be responsible for RAMS and operating procedures associated with Aerodynamic Operations.
  • Set up schedules for the standard maintenance of equipment within the control of Aerodynamic Operations including mechanical rigs and electrical test equipment.
  • Build a skills matrix for operational staff that ensures all team members have the necessary skills on a consistent basis to provide operational resilience.
  • Develop and document best practice operating procedures
  • Manage and improve working environments.
  • Develop a culture of proactivity, accountability and continuous improvement.
  • Introduce and optimise working practices to improve model quality, reduce time and material wastage and reduce time to test readiness.
  • Identify areas for investment to improve our aerodynamic operational output.

What we are looking for in you

  • Mechanical or electrical/electronic engineering background to degree level or equivalent
  • Autonomous and pro-active with an extensive experience of mechanical rigs, wind tunnel models and/or instrumentation
  • Calm under pressure with effective time management skills
