Senior Systems Support Engineer    

Aircraft Research Association (ARA) is a unique SME and the UK’s leading independent transonic wind tunnel with a passionate workforce of engineering and aerodynamic professionals. We are a leading specialist in aerodynamic research providing complementary services and solutions to international aerospace and defence clients. Our clients include Saab, Bombardier, Boeing, Turkish Aerospace, Lockheed Martin, Airbus, Comac and BAE Systems.

Typical projects include producing scaled-down military and civilian aircraft models, comprising multiple parts, which are assembled together and used as highly accurate forces/pressures measuring devices within the on-site high-speed (transonic) wind tunnel.


Reporting to the IT Manager, we are looking to recruit an experienced Senior Systems Support Engineer to join our busy hands-on IT Team where key relationships will be employees and third party IT support staff.

Typical hours: Full-time, 38-hour per week 

Salary range: £40 – £45K (depending on experience)

Key Purpose of the Job:

This is a varied and demanding role and responsibilities will include:

  • Manage and administer IT Service Desk; including all incidents/requests are assigned, prioritised & resolved
  • Monitor the effectiveness of incident management and recommend improvements and drive efficiency and effectiveness of the incident management process.
  • Manage and administer all aspects of Windows servers, with specific responsibility for Active Directory, Group Policy, folder and file access & security
  • Manage & administer Email servers
  • Establishing and reporting outstanding known errors and workarounds and recommending permanent resolutions to issues and problems
  • Ensure all servers and workstation Operating Systems & software are kept up to date in compliance with Cyber Essentials certification
  • Ensure availability of IT services and resources
  • Supporting ARA remote users and remote services
  • Assessing risk, identifying critical service and system dependencies and defining and implementing countermeasures
  • Contribute to the implementation of new systems, helping to design services and applications with the IT Manager, ensuring that they meet the requirements of ARA, and design and perform tests for functionality, performance and manageability of IT services to support service transition activities
  • Monitoring of file and folder access, application usage, firewalls and reporting concerns to the IT Manager.
  • Responsibility for specific IT projects and report through appropriate review meetings
  • Working with the IT Manager on defining overall IT strategy, advising on their specific areas of specialisation and expertise
  • Ensuring ARA processes and procedures are applied
  • Ensuring that all systems and operating documentation and knowledge is up to date and properly utilised
  • Procurement of Desktop PCs, laptops and associated hardware & software
  • Management of the server rooms
  • Coach and develop other team members relating to IT issues and solutions
  • Carry out any other duties which may be required in order to facilitate the efficient and effective running of the department as requested by the IT Manager.

What we are looking for in you:

Essential

  • Minimum A Level education and or HNC/D with extensive experience
  • Experience and knowledge of IT Security
  • Strong Microsoft desktop and applications support
  • Strong Microsoft server and applications support
  • Microsoft Exchange server administration
  • Excellent customer service and problem solving skills
  • Team player who encourages team working
  • Ability to use, understand and interpret best practice, policies and procedures to ensure adherence

Desirable

  • Bachelor’s Degree in IT (or related subject)
  • Microsoft certification in servers and server applications
  • ITIL foundation
  • Understanding of networking

The successful candidate must satisfy security clearance requirements – including the last 5 years continual UK residency.
