Engineering Services Team Leader (Grade 4B)

Aircraft Research Association (ARA), the UK’s leading independent transonic wind tunnel, is looking to recruit two experienced and motivated Team Leaders to join our Engineering Services team, who will play an integral part in the operation, maintenance and repair of ARA’s unique testing facilities.

The Engineering Services Team is a multi-disciplined team of electrical and mechanical technicians who operate, maintain and repair our wind tunnel, other facilities and balance of plant, across two shifts.  As part of this team you will enjoy a highly varied role involving work on various industrial machinery such as:

  • Rotating plant, including motors, journal bearings, fans, and compressors, and associated drives ranging from a few kilowatts to 17,000kW..
  • Hydraulic systems, including hydraulic power units, circuits, and actuators.
  • Electrical actuators for the control of hydraulic and pneumatic systems.
  • Low voltage and HV systems.
  • Pneumatic systems, including air compressors (ranging from 7 bar to 250 bar), circuits and actuators.
  • Cooling systems, including water pumps, heat exchangers, evaporative cooling towers and chillers.
  • Air drying systems.
  • Lubrication systems.
  • Model movement systems.
  • Water treatment plant.

Reporting to the Engineering Services Manager, the successful candidates will each be responsible for a shift team, ensuring efficient deployment of their team’s efforts to across the site. They may be from either an electrical or mechanical background, and will  have an adequate understanding of disciplines outside their own area to manage these activities.   

Key responsibilities:

  • Lead, motivate and manage a team of mixed-discipline technicians to provide efficient maintenance, repair, and facility running.
  • Manage your team’s workloads and prioritisation ensuring a continued high output, to include training and coaching, and hands-on involvement in tasks.
  • Ensure safe and effective operations of both the team and hired contract staff through observance of ARA Quality, Health and Safety, and Environmental standards and procedures.
  • Monitor task related ticketing system (ShireSystem), and associated KPIs, to determine priorities for the team and ensure the forward workload is adequately planned and resourced, and any shortfalls are understood and addressed.
  • Identify and engage with certified contractors in areas such as asbestos or HV switching.

What do we need from you? 

  • HNC Electrical, Mechanical or related discipline, or equivalent relevant industry experience.
  • Proven track record of managing a team of multi-discipline technicians, including all aspects of supervisory management.
  • Self-motivated and able to take initiative in solving site issues.
  • Strong coaching and training skills, and willingness to work hands-on, alongside team members, in delivering team objectives.
  • Ability to communicate with all levels of employees, maintaining close operational co-operation with other teams including effective handover of tasks between shifts.
  • Respond effectively to facility maintenance requests using computer based ticket requests, emails and word of mouth.
  • Understanding of the need for documentation such as Engineering Change Records, and recording of works performed, and ensuring compliance of ARA Quality Systems.
  • Familiarity with of safety aspects of working with a range of hazards (eg mains electricity, confined spaces, working at height), and respecting dangers of specialist systems (eg high pressure air and high voltages), ensuring necessary RAMS are in place and followed.
  • Computer literacy including standard office software, such as Outlook and Excel, and also the ability to learn to use specialist software (such as ShireSystem).

This is an exciting permanent opportunity for the right person to be join our Engineering Services team, operating in an established facility working two day shift patterns Monday to Friday from 0630 to 1430hrs and 1400hrs to 2200hrs equating to a 38 hour contracted week, with occasional out-of-hours duties as and when required.
