3rd Line IT Support Engineer (12 Months FTC – Grade 4B)

Our clients include Saab, Bombardier, Boeing, Turkish Aerospace, Lockheed Martin, Airbus, Comac and BAE Systems.


Aircraft Research Association (ARA), the UK’s leading independent transonic wind tunnel, is looking to recruit a 3rd Line IT Support Engineer on a full-time fixed term contract basis up to 12 months to complement its current IT team. The IT department is a small multi-disciplined team providing support to the whole organisation, taking a proactive approach to resolving issues.  Our site in Bedford centres around our impressive transonic wind tunnel – the equipment which drives it – whilst the research performed is often unique to ARA and involves many bespoke processes. ARA boasts a wide international customer base of aircraft manufacturers who require new and novel solutions to achieve highly accurate results from wind tunnel trials conducted at ARA.  

What we are looking for from you?

  • Minimum A Level education and/or HND with extensive experience
  • ITIL foundation certification
  • Experience of network design and of IT security environments and standards
  • Experience of Firewall setup, configuration and monitoring
  • Strong Microsoft server and server applications, knowledge & experience
  • Strong Linux server and applications, knowledge & experience
  • Excellent customer service skills providing proactive support for users
  • SQL skills and experience
  • The ability to use, understand and interpret the best practice, policies and procedures to ensure adherence
  • Team player who encourages sharing of knowledge and expertise
  • Encourages sharing of knowledge and expertise
  • Excellent problem solving skills
  • Resilient and able to work under pressure

Desirable skills:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in IT (or related subject)
  • ITIL Intermediate Service Lifecycle certification
  • Microsoft certification in Windows servers MCSA
  • Experience in supporting HPC environments
  • Information Security Certification
  • Awareness of the role IT plays in enabling the business objectives to be met
  • Awareness of what IT can deliver to the business, including latest capabilities
