Model Support

Introduction

Model support systems are available for both full-span and half-span models. Full span models can be mounted on single stings or twin stings depending on the type of test required.

Model Carts

Model Cart

Wind tunnel models are installed on mobile carts which are wheeled into the tunnel test section when ready for testing.

Integral to these model carts are the mechanisms used to alter the attitude of the model during a test.

Two styles of model carts are available – for full-span models and for half-span models.

The photograph shows a full-span cart and model.

Single Sting Support

Single Sting

The standard mounting system for full span models is the single sting. A wide range of single stings is available at ARA. Customer supplied stings can also be accommodated upon request.

Twin Sting Support

Twin Sting

For rear fuselage and empennage testing, twin sting mounting systems are available.

The photograph shows a model with both a twin sting and a single sting. The model was used in a test to determine the effect of different model support systems on the airflow around the model and the measured aerodynamic loads.

Half Span Models

Half Span

Half span models are mounted on an under-floor balance installed in a mobile cart. The balance sits in a heated oil bath which keeps the balance temperature stable during a test; this is done to ensure the loads measured by the balance are as accurate as possible.
