Model Preparation and Reconfiguration

Model preparation

Introduction

A typical wind tunnel test will begin with a baseline aircraft model configuration. The test will then progress with a series of test sequences between which the model is reconfigured. Model changes vary from the minor – like a change in the angle of an aileron – to the major – like a change of wing. Model preparation and reconfiguration must be performed to the highest standard in order to give confidence that delta increments in loads between model configurations are due solely to changes in model parts.

Experience and Proven Capability

ARA has very considerable experience in preparing and reconfiguring models for a wide range of wind tunnel tests. Our team of very experienced technicians complete model changes not only to the superb standard expected by our customers, but also very efficiently, which is important in driving down the cost of a wind tunnel test.

One of the areas where ARA adds high value is in having a wind tunnel model design capability along side its tunnel facilities.  The experience of performing different types of model changes can be fed back to our designers to ensure that their designs are continually driven to enabling efficient wind tunnel model changes, which will drive down the cost of a wind tunnel test.

On some occasions our Customer's stated policy is to bring their own model engineers with them to a test, since this is a practice they adopt at all wind tunnel sites.  In this case, ARA is happy to accomodate these staff and to work with them as required.
