Finite Element Analysis

Whether a model design is destined for test in the ARA large scale TWT or any other test facility worldwide, all test hardware will be subject to meeting specific strength and safety requirements.

To support the design process and preliminary hand calculations, finite element structural analyses are undertaken to ensure that adequate safety factors are achieved. Currently, FEA software proprietary to the CAD packages employed are used. These include:

  • Catia
  • V5, GPS & GAS
  • Pro-E Mechanica

Documentation relevant to the facility will be studied and a detailed stress report issued to ensure that the model is fully compliant with the facility's requirements.

Finite element structural and thermal analysis is also an essential tool that has been used extensively in the development of methodologies for the design of modern wind tunnel force measuring balances.
