Introduction

A400M

The ARA Model Design and Manufacture Department has over 50 years experience in the design and manufacture of models, test rigs and strain-gauge balances for ARA's and external agencies' wind tunnels. These include low-speed, continuous and high-speed, blow down wind tunnels in Europe, America and Asia and the two large cryogenic facilities in the world, namely the European Transonic Tunnel (ETW) in Germany and the National Transonic Facility in America.  The Design and Manufacture Department's business has grown in recent years to the point whereby 70% of its business is for building models for testing in these other facilities.  The department's reputation for producing demanding models to a very high quality of finish and accuracy has led to it manufacturing models for the World's largest Civil and Military aircraft programmes.

ARA's Design and Manufacture Department provides a complete service from receipt of design data to completion of model assembly and inspection. The ARA philosophy is to use the expertise of both the Design and Manufacture and Experimental Aerodynamics Departments to provide wind tunnel models which maximise wind tunnel productivity by minimising model change times; thereby driving down the cost of wind tunnel testing.  This offering from ARA ensures that it is delivering high value into its wind tunnel models when the overall price of determining the aerodynamic database is considered.  ARA also provides a service whereby designers and craftsmen support the preparation of models at other wind tunnel sites, if our Customers require that service.
